They aren't required, simply download the content with the "internet connection" refered to with the requirements.

The collectors editions minimum requirements should be changed to fit the fact that it is on DVD.

If he had that quoted system, he could use the internet connection to install. No need for the cd drive at all.

Yep, but companies like Gamestop need to alter their listed requirements...

the point is that we as consumers should not have to do this. we should not have to work around a product that we paid for with our hard earned money.

we as consumers have rights that large coorporations are taking advantage of. in a world that has several different types of media that a product can be released on, the maufacturer needs to cater to the needs of its consumers.

it is unfortunate that these corporations dont listen and are only concerned with money. the only way to make them change their ways is to be vocal about our concerns. to demand equal treatment for all consumers. not just the ones with DVD drives.

many will find my views rigid and maybe a bit silly. but the fact remains...if you let corporations take just a little of your rights away, they will take all of them away.
The market is driven by consumers. DVD's are ubiquitous because the consumer has chosen it as a preferred medium. Valve's survey says 91.83% of their customers have a DVD-ROM drive. The only entity forcing you to upgrade is us.

if you have GW already you have Nightfall installed already except for the final updates.

from interview with JEFF STRAIN
Quote:
JS: Let me give you an anecdote of the technological aspect of the game that people don’t really realize. You know, we ship Factions on the 28th (Today), but what people don’t realize is that every Guild Wars gamer right now has factions sitting on their hard drive. We have this streaming technology that we’ve build into the game from day one that allows us to quickly add content to the game and fix unbalance issues. We also use it to drive these big global events that we have – five or six times a year, we have either worldwide open events or beta preview events, things like that. People are able to jump in, see the new content, and play 72 hours over the weekend, but they don’t ever have to download a huge client. Gamers are so used to it now that they don’t question how it works, well the way it works is that 3 weeks or sometimes a month before we start an event, we start using idle bandwidth as they play Guild Wars to stream down the assets for the event to their computer so that when the event starts, almost everybody already has it on their hard drive.

PC DVD-ROM Games have been coming out in Europe with no alternative versions for many years now, I think it's about time Americans caught up

That would be an interesting poll, if for no other reason than to see how large a percentage vote that it doesn't matter to them since they download the client and never use the disks to install

1) Go to the store
2) Pick up a copy of Nightfall (SE or CE)
3) Go home and open the box
4) Take out the CD-Key
5) Login to your account
6) Click add/modify CD-Key
7) Input GW: Nightfall CD-Key
8) Game on and enjoy
To add to that:

9) Just before you go to bed, go to the shortcut on your desktop, right-click and add -image on the end of the shortcut destination, then start it up and leave it running. It downloads EVERY image for EVERY map, so you only have to uncompress them when you load them. That's only if you don't play overnight, anyway :P. But for a slow computer, it's awesome.

I want my copy of GW on 5" Floppies, if you please. Also, can I get the new X-Men III on Betamax?

I bought my first PC in 1998. I shopped around many pre-built desktops to find built-in DVD/CD-ROM at my price point, with all the other features I wanted.I found one for almost $100 below my budget, then, after ~2 weeks. It is unfortunate you did not do the same, but that is your choice, not ANet's fault. I
have actually found it annoying that software has only been available on 2-5 CDs for so long. I applaud ANet for releasing on DVD, and besides, as eveyone else pointed out, you just download the client, and type your key-done. Stop whining.

Screw this, Guild Wars had better come on punched cards!

In all seriousness, I'm on my 3rd DVD drive at the moment. They're cheaper than a good meal out. I don't give a rats about ArenaNET's obligations to their consumers on this front, people who insist on using CDROM drives for no good reason have held the rest of us back.

Historically when a portion of a consumers became so small that it was not worth supporting them they were simply "end of lifed" by companies. Tape vs Audio CD, VHS vs Betamax, all good examples. Upgrade before this happens because after that no one will care.

EDIT: Looking at my Nightfall CE box it says DVD Drive in the required specs and has a big "PC DVD" symbol on it. If I were to guess it's contents, I'd say a DVD was in there.
